North and West Melbourne turned out in force on October 18 as the Queensberry Cup roared back for its fourth and most vibrant year yet, transforming Errol and Queensberry streets into a sun-soaked arena of racing, music and community celebration.

Blessed with perfect weather, the beloved billy cart festival attracted locals, visitors and curious newcomers, all eager to cheer on competitors, enjoy live entertainment and soak up the festive street-party atmosphere.

The day kicked off at 1pm and included performances from Valanga Khoza, the School of Loving Music Juniors Band and the Famous Village Dog Show. As crowds lined the racetrack along Errol St, the 7–11 heats rolled into action, setting the tone for a day of fast starts, spectacular turns and plenty of laughter.

Open heats, celebrity races and the grand final kept spectators on edge throughout the afternoon, while the trackside and youth-zone stages offered a packed lineup of performances including Zumba with Yuki, River Nile Dancers, Homebrew Verandah Singers, Red Temperance and The Imaginators. Giant games, a basketball zone and chill-out spaces ensured young people remained at the heart of the event’s energy.

The celebrity races were among the day’s most anticipated moments, with Lord Mayor Nick Reece, 3AW broadcaster Russell Howcroft and federal MP Sarah Witty jumping behind the wheel of custom-built carts crafted by local favourite Pete Furlong.

This year’s Cup also continued its celebration of North and West Melbourne’s cultural diversity. A Chinese community spotlight featured wushu martial arts, Chinese dance and a striking pipa performance blending heavy metal with traditional influence, drawing large and appreciative audiences.

The festivities culminated in the Queensberry Cup Awards at 5pm, before DJ Scooney kept the party alive into the early evening, with many revellers spilling across North and West Melbourne to enjoy its nightlife.
