Al Makan brings authentic Lebanese flavour to North Melbourne
Al Makan has arrived on Errol St, bringing authentic Lebanese cuisine to the heart of North Melbourne.
Opened in February this year, Al Makan is the passion project of veteran chef and owner Niz, who boasts more than 30 years in the hospitality industry.
“I’ve always wanted to do Lebanese food,” Niz said, who has been a chef for 32 years. “It’s my first Lebanese restaurant – all my cooking comes from my mum.”
That strong family connection forms the heart of Al Makan’s philosophy.
Every dish on the menu is made in-house, from dips like hummus and baba ghanoush to slow-cooked mains and flaky sambousek. “We don’t buy anything from outside. All the food is real, homemade food,” Niz told North West City News.
The restaurant, located at 13 Errol St, offers a rare culinary option in an area more familiar with coffee shops and pubs.
“There’s nothing like this in the area,” Niz said.
“I wouldn’t even know where the closest [Lebanese restaurant] would be after this.”
Following a complete renovation, the space is warm and inviting, blending contemporary design with touches of traditional Middle Eastern style.
It’s already becoming a neighbourhood favourite, thanks in part to standout dishes like the rich eggplant stew and slow-cooked lamb – a personal favourite of Niz’s.
To complement the food, Al Makan also serves a curated selection of Lebanese drinks, including beer, wines, and a monthly rotating cocktail.

Like many small businesses, the restaurant’s journey hasn’t been without challenges.
“It’s had its ups and downs,” Niz said.
“We’re still trying to figure out North Melbourne, but the people here have been beautiful – really supportive.”
For Niz, Al Makan is more than a restaurant – it’s the realisation of a long-held dream.
“I’ve had my own places before, but I always dreamed of opening a Lebanese restaurant,” he said.
Al Makan is open seven days a week from 11. 30am to 10pm, offering North Melbourne a fresh, home-cooked slice of Lebanon – and a warm welcome for anyone who walks through the door.
“There’s nothing better than putting a smile on the customer’s face and seeing them enjoy your food.” •
