Community health provider cohealth has appointed experienced not-for-profit director Paul Geyer as its transitional board chair as the organisation continues a wider governance overhaul.

Mr Geyer will lead the board on an interim basis while recruitment for a longer-term chair is under way.

His appointment follows a turbulent period for cohealth, which has been implementing recommendations from an independent review into its GP services, governance and finances after the closure of clinics in Collingwood, Fitzroy and Kensington triggered significant community backlash.

The Victorian Government last month appointed Chris Altis as a board monitor for an initial 12-month term, with responsibility for observing board and committee meetings and reporting directly to government.

The independent review had found weaknesses in governance and management contributed to cohealth’s financial problems and recommended stronger oversight, board renewal and clearer performance expectations.

Mr Geyer brings governance experience across the health, early learning, agriculture and tourism sectors.

He joins previously announced interim chief executive Kate Gillan and interim medical lead Dr Eileen Gourley as part of cohealth’s temporary leadership structure.

Ms Gillan said the organisation was focused on implementing the review’s recommendations while continuing major service initiatives.

“We have the right people in place as we continue implementing the recommendations of the Independent Review into cohealth’s GP services and deliver important initiatives, including the opening of the new Flinders Street Community Health Hub later this year,” she said.

“I am confident cohealth is well placed for the future, with the continued dedication of our people.”

The latest appointment marks another step in cohealth’s efforts to stabilise its leadership and rebuild confidence following months of scrutiny over its governance and decision-making.
