Flemington residents join colourful CHL community celebration
More than 150 residents across Community Housing Limited’s Melbourne communities came together this month for a series of vibrant neighbourhood celebrations, with the Flemington event on December 15 drawing strong local participation from families.
Hosted across CHL sites in Prahran, Brighton and Flemington, the community barbecues offered a mix of hands-on activities and social connection. Children and adults took part in mask-making, henna painting and hair braiding, while others joined friendly outdoor competitions in sports and games. Karaoke, hip-hop dance demonstrations and even ice-cream cup-stuffing stations added to the festive atmosphere.
At Victoria St in Flemington, the event provided a valuable chance for residents of the dense inner-city estate to connect with one another, take part in creative activities and meet support organisations that work closely with the community.
CHL tenant Shelley Reich, who also serves on CHL’s events and activities committee, said the gatherings played an important role in strengthening social ties.
“Being a part of the CHL community has allowed me to do my bit in the community and have a positive impact on the people around me,” Ms Reich said. “Seeing people of all ages come together, dancing together and embracing the fun is exactly why community initiatives matter – they lift morale and help build a stronger, happier community.”
Representatives from local councils and key service providers attended, including Better Health Network, Uniting, Family Life, Neighbourhood Houses, The Venny and Whole Life Pharmacy.
CHL community development manager Kate Daddo said the partnerships underpinned the supportive environment that events like these aimed to foster.
“These events are a wonderful chance for people to come together and relax, and also serve as a meaningful space for tenants to learn about the local services that CHL partner with,” she said. “They open up new opportunities and strengthen the support networks around them.”
