Kensington locals are being encouraged to lace up their runners and hit the park, with the City of Melbourne launching a new series of free community fitness classes designed to get Melburnians moving.

More than 500 places are now open for booking across the city as part of the Fitness in the Park program, which runs from November through April in some of Melbourne’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.

The first local session kicks off at JJ Holland Park in Kensington on Sunday, November 30 at 9am, where residents can enjoy a lively Zumba and dance class – free of charge. Participants will also be treated to complimentary refreshments after the workout, with a chance to meet neighbours and chat with councillors.

The Lord Mayor Nick Reece said the initiative was about breaking down barriers to fitness and making exercise fun and accessible for everyone.

Whether you’re a gym junkie, an exercise newbie or a seasoned Pilates princess – our free fitness classes offer something for everyone,” Cr Reece said.

“Half of adults in the City of Melbourne don’t get enough exercise, which is completely understandable with time and cost barriers. That’s why we’re delivering more accessible ways for everyone to get healthier, stronger and feel better.”

Following Kensington’s launch, the program will roll through Carlton, Fawkner Park, Southbank, Docklands, and City Square, offering a variety of classes including Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Boxing and Family Fitness sessions.

Other Fitness in the Park program times include:

  • Sunday, December 14, 9am at Princes Park Carlton: Tai Chi
  • Thursday, January 29, 6pm at Fawkner Park: Yoga
  • Sunday, February 22, 8am at Melbourne Square Basketball Court Southbank: Pilates
  • Wednesday, March 25, 12 .30pm at Docklands Sports Courts: Boxing
  • Wednesday, April 8, 11am at City Square: Family Fitness (during school holidays)

Cr Gladys Liu
, portfolio lead for community, health and city services – and a qualified fitness instructor herself – said the sessions were a great way to stay active and connected.

“Exercising with others makes it easier to stay motivated,” Cr Liu said. “We know staying active is key to physical and mental wellbeing – so we hope these free classes inspire people to keep moving.”

The Kensington event promises to be one of the highlights of the program, with organisers expecting a strong turnout from the local community.

Bookings are essential, and spaces are limited depending on the activity and venue. For more information or to register, visit melbourne.vic.gov.au
