How years of dedication led one North Melbourne trader to own an iconic city pub

After leaving school John Fox served his time in the fickle and harsh hospitality industry and the thought of owning a pub may have seemed like a pipe dream at times. 

However, that dream became a reality 11 years ago for the North Melbourne publican and his wife when they took the reins of The Leveson in North Melbourne. 

Involved with the business since the early 2000s as a part-owner, Mr Fox said that he was proud to have watched the business grow into the institution it is today. 

The premier North Melbourne watering hole is open seven days and can cater for up to 470 patrons. 

It’s a great place to come for a cheeky aperitif or hearty meal according to Mr Fox, who said the menu has something for everyone, with four different steak cuts, a renowned parma and refreshing salads all on offer. 

There is also an extensive beer list with an array of craft beers on tap that will leave any beer connoisseur drooling. 

However, it’s not only The Leveson’s seasonal menu that has punters flocking to the hotel in droves. 

The venue's design is a unique blend of new and old, with a traditional Victorian pub aesthetic and a modern and comfortable interior. 

It is also home to an elegant but rustic function room that offers a truly unique space. 

Watching the business grow into what it is today has been rewarding but also a challenge according to Mr Fox, who admitted the business had struggled post pandemic. 

“It’s very hard,” Mr Fox said. “It still hasn’t got back to its full potential, especially in North Melbourne.” 

“North Melbourne is obviously on the outskirts, so we probably get a little bit missed.” 

However, The Leveson is worth going out of your way to visit, with a fantastic seasonal menu and expansive beer list, it’s one of the great classic pubs that lives on in the city’s north.
