Last call at The Quiet Man: beloved Irish pub to close on St Patrick’s Day
The Quiet Man Irish Pub has called last drinks, with the iconic 27-year-old Kensington institution set to close its doors for good on March 17, in a final celebration of St Patrick’s Day.
A cherished spot for Kensington locals, Flemington racegoers, and Irish expats alike, The Quiet Man has been pouring pints of Guinness since 1998.
Announcing the news on social media, the pub was met with an outpouring of love, as “devastated” patrons filled the comments with tributes, sharing their appreciation and reminiscing about their favorite memories at the iconic venue.
“I met an Irish backpacker in the doorway of The Quiet Man 19 years ago. Married 17 years now. So sad it’s closing,” one wrote.
“I've been going here for almost 20 years and have formed a love for all things Irish – the pints, the food, the atmosphere, the craic … and now I'm getting married to an Irishman. Thank you for all the memories and serving delicious creamy pints and a solid Sunday roast and parma for all these years,” another said.
Zengal Hospitality Group, led by Irish expats Zenita O’Neill and James Gallagher, acquired the pub last year for $4.5 million.
According to real estate agency LemonBaxter, the beloved venue sold in just 59 days, with its new owner-occupiers planning to “refurbish and breathe new life into the establishment”.
Over its storied history, the pub has poured two million pints of Guinness, served one million meals, and hosted thousands of live performances.
Insisting they’re “not done yet,” The Quiet Man will keep the good times rolling with live shows every Friday and Saturday until March 17.
“We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has ever walked through our doors – whether you were here for a quick pint, a Sunday session, or just to remind you what Guinness was supposed to taste like,” the social media post read.
“You’ve made this place more than just a pub – you've made it a home.” •
