New high-speed depot makes bulk recycling easier in North Melbourne

North Melbourne is now home to its first high-speed recycling depot, launched by Envirobank in collaboration with Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).

Located at 32 Steel St, the new facility provides a fast and efficient way for the community to recycle eligible containers and receive a 10-cent refund per item.

Unlike reverse vending machines (RVMs), which accept containers individually, Envirobank depots are equipped with high-speed counting machines, allowing customers to recycle in bulk, which saves time and makes the process much more convenient.

“This new depot is an opportunity for Melbourne’s residents and businesses to make recycling part of their daily lives,” Envirobank founder and Jagera woman, Narelle Anderson said.

“We’re not only providing a way for customers to get their 10-cent refunds quickly in bulk, we’re also creating a convenient and accessible way for all of us to contribute to a cleaner, greener city,” she said. “Together, we’re building a stronger circular economy.”

The initiative aligns with Envirobank’s dedication to sustainability and community, as a proudly Indigenous-owned business.

Locals can recycle a variety of containers, including plastic, glass, and aluminium, as long as they are free of liquid, uncrushed, and have the barcode intact. Wine, spirits, milk, and cordial bottles are not currently part of the scheme.

“At Envirobank, we’re caring for Country by rethinking waste and embracing the circular economy,” Ms Anderson told North West City News.

“Our commitment to innovation drives us to invest in technology and create streamlined, efficient recycling solutions like this new depot,” she said.

“By doing so, we’re empowering Melbourne communities to recycle more efficiently and make a real impact on reducing landfill.”

In addition to receiving 10-cent refunds, visitors to the North Melbourne location will also have the chance to view artwork from Coolamon Creative, a project run by sisters Sam and Gabrielle, who are descendants of the Dagoman people from Katherine and are based in Mparntwe on Arrente Country.

Envirobank has also introduced a drive-through option at the new facility.

“By using the North Melbourne depot, you’re ensuring that every eligible container is recycled without contamination, guaranteeing its journey back into the supply chain,” Ms Anderson said.

“This is how we take meaningful steps toward a sustainable future for all Australians.” •
