The beloved Queensberry Cup is back for its 2024 iteration on October 19, inviting the North and West Melbourne communities to join in a vibrant day of celebration.

Starting in 2022, the Cup sees up to 50 daring billycart racers speeding down Errol St hill on their custom-built creations.

With categories for all ages, from kids’ competitions to open races for experienced competitors, there’s an opportunity for everyone to join in the fun.

“Going back more than 100 years, North and West Melbourne was a real centre for horse and carts. That’s kind of continued even to this day, we’ve got quite a lot of auto and industrial businesses,” North & West Melbourne Neighbourhood Centre director, Ariel Valent said.

“The event took shape that way – it was really our organisation trying to think what we can do to bring the community back together out of COVID.”

This year, the event will feature an exciting “celebrity race”, where several Lord Mayoral candidates will compete head-to-head, ready to “duke it out on the street”.

“We had our first celebrity race last year with then Lord Mayor Sally Capp racing against ABC broadcaster Virginia Trioli – before the Lord Mayor crashed out,” Mr Valent told North West City News.

“Now, Lord Mayor Nick Reece is keen to follow that tradition, and given the election timing, we’ve offered it up to other candidates as well.”

In addition to the billycart racing, the day is packed with a variety of activities and events to keep you entertained from start to finish.

Highlights include the return of the Village Dog Show, complimentary haircuts from local barbers, a make-your-own smoothie stall, and dog grooming services from Bark Road.

Local food vendors will be serving a delightful range of cuisines, from Chinese and Greek to Mexican, with The Courthouse hosting a vibrant bar area.

The main stage will feature a lineup of performances throughout the day, including a local parents' rock band and shows by the Ministry of Dance.

To cap off the festivities, the after-party will be hosted by the local Czechoslovak club, Sokol Melbourne.

“We try to showcase local businesses and give everyone an opportunity to get involved and active. We hope to give people that great experience they had in that first two years,” Mr Valent said.

An event like this is only possible with the support of volunteers.

This year, 50 dedicated community members have selflessly committed their time to ensure a fantastic experience for everyone in the North and West Melbourne community. •
