Volunteers are the driving force behind the success of scouting around the world. In Victoria alone, more than 5000 volunteers generously give their time – and each one deserves to be celebrated during National Volunteer Week.

Matthew Launer, Assistant Scout Leader at 6th Melbourne Scout Group, was recently presented with his Wood Badge – scouting’s peak award in leader training – in front of youth members, fellow leaders and supporters at the group’s hall in Kensington.

Achieved over an 18-month period, Matthew’s Wood Badge program was a practical and engaging leadership training experience recognised by Scouts worldwide. The course gave Matthew the opportunity to share his experiences with like-minded leaders and deepen his understanding of the youth program, which is adventurous, fun, challenging and inclusive for all members.

Scouting has shaped the development of young people for more than 100 years and offers something for everyone – from our youngest five-year-old Joey Scouts to young adult Rovers up to 25 years of age – with a program focused on life skills, resilience and leadership. Today, Scouts are in every part of our community and remain one of the biggest and most successful youth organisations in Australia.

The 6th Melbourne Scout Group has played a vital role in the Kensington community since 1908, providing countless children with enduring life skills and experiences. Now numbering more than 90 youth members, leaders and supporters, the group is always ready to welcome new members.
