Work begins on West Melbourne’s new “green oasis”
Construction is now under way on the Greening Roden Street project, which will transform a section of West Melbourne into a vibrant, nature-filled space.
Located between King and Spencer streets, the project will overhaul the current streetscape with the addition of garden beds designed to boost local biodiversity, an upgraded accessible path network for pedestrians, and a speed hump to slow vehicles and create a safer environment.
The project also includes Water Sensitive Urban Design infrastructure to help reduce stormwater run-off, contributing to the area’s environmental sustainability.
As part of the transformation, the City of Melbourne will plant 43 new trees in specially improved conditions, replacing 16 ageing or deteriorating trees.
The project follows strong community backing, with more than 90 per cent of those consulted during community engagement in 2023 supporting the proposal.

“A green oasis is coming to the heart of West Melbourne and I can’t wait to see this grey pavement transform into more than 1000 square metres of lush open space,” Lord Mayor Nick Reece said.
This is going to be a beautiful place where people can just relax and enjoy the outdoors surrounded by more trees and new garden beds, and with upgraded paths to make it easy for everyone to wander through.
The council’s environment portfolio head Cr Davydd Griffiths said the project would provide significant benefits for both residents and visitors.
“We know that green open space is vital for both our city’s liveability and our community’s wellbeing,” he said.
“I’m incredibly excited that work is now under way to deliver the Greening Roden Street project – creating an idyllic green retreat to be enjoyed by the entire West Melbourne community.” •
