Doors set to open at Kensington’s new aquatic and rec centre this month
Kensington is about to get its long-awaited health and wellbeing hub, with the City of Melbourne confirming the Kensington Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre (KCARC) will open on Monday, 29 September.
The Altona St facility replaces the 1970s-built centre and delivers a step change in space, accessibility and programs. Inside, locals will find a 25-metre indoor pool, three full-sized multi-purpose courts, a significantly expanded gym, health and wellness rooms, and community meeting spaces designed to host everything from fitness classes to neighbourhood gatherings.
A dedicated children’s water play area rounds out the new aquatic offer, with universal access and family-friendly change facilities throughout.
“Grab your bathers, lace up your sneakers and roll out the yoga mat – Kensington's new Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre opens its doors on Monday, September 29,” Lord Mayor Nick Reece said.
“Kensington Rec is back bigger and better than ever – with a 25-metre indoor pool, three full-sized multi-purpose courts, upgraded gym, health and wellness facilities, community meeting spaces and so much more.”
To mark the occasion, the council will host a community day on Sunday, September 28, giving residents an early look inside and the chance to meet the centre team.
“To celebrate, we’re hosting a special community day … with a sneak peek inside the new facilities and the chance to meet our friendly team,” Cr Reece said.
I want to thank the community for their patience as we’ve delivered this incredible project – which I’m sure has been worth the wait.
Portfolio lead for Community, Health and City Services Cr Gladys Liu said the design brief was simple: build for today, plan for tomorrow. “With amazing new facilities and bigger spaces to meet the needs of our growing population – we’re delivering everything our community needs to stay active and connected.”
Final touches have been progressing across the precinct in recent weeks, including landscaping and fit-out works. Safety upgrades around the centre are also being completed, with new pedestrian crossings and speed humps on Altona Street and the adjacent service lane to improve access for families, school groups and older residents.
The centre will be operated by YMCA, with program details, membership options and swim lesson information to be released ahead of opening. Locals can subscribe to updates to be first in line for timetables across aquatics, court sports, group fitness and wellness programs.
