The Doot returns: Kensington’s beloved Doutta Galla Hotel to reopen

After nearly a year with its doors closed, Kensington's most iconic local – the Doutta Galla Hotel, affectionately known as The Doot – is set to reopen this spring with a bold new look and under new ownership.

Following extensive renovations since November 2024, the 339 Racecourse Rd venue will throw open its famous red doors just in time for Melbourne Cup Week, unveiling a complete transformation that merges the pub’s 19th-century charm with contemporary design and hospitality.

Under the stewardship of hospitality powerhouse Kickon Group – the team behind The Terminus Hotel, The Continental, and Pincho Disco – The Doot’s revival marks a major milestone for Melbourne’s inner north.

Led by Kickon Group’s Craig Shearer, alongside new pub partner Ben Lougoon and a star-studded group of investors including actor Travis Fimmel and former AFL players Luke Hodge and Andrew Walker, the relaunch promises to deliver both style and soul.

Guests will be greeted by a completely reimagined interior, featuring new bars across all three levels, with the previously unused first and second floors converted into lively new spaces. On the ground floor, the pub now offers dual spaces – a buzzing bar on one side and a refined yet relaxed restaurant on the other.

The new menu will focus on seasonal ingredients and elevated pub classics, with an extensive steak offering and bold, flavour-driven dishes designed for sharing. Upstairs, a modern beer hall-style function area will open in the coming months, perfect for events ranging from birthdays and corporate gatherings to race day celebrations. The open void between the two upper levels will flood the space with natural light, creating a warm and energetic atmosphere that flows through the entire venue.

Despite the facelift, The Doot remains true to its roots. Its heritage red doors have been lovingly restored, symbolising the pub’s legacy as a cornerstone of Kensington life since 1889. For generations, it’s been a meeting place for locals, racegoers and footy fans – a place where stories, songs and friendships have thrived.

Now, with a 3am licence, late-night music, and a refreshed sense of purpose, The Doot’s next chapter is ready to begin – continuing its long tradition as both a neighbourhood local and a must-visit Melbourne destination.
