A fire that broke out in a North Melbourne shop is being investigated after it caused extensive damage.

Firefighters were called to a business in Abbotsford St following multiple call to Triple-0 about 4am on October 11.

“Crews arrived on scene within four minutes, to find the building in flames and threatening neighbouring properties,” a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.

“Firefighters worked to contain the fire, gaining the upper hand by 4.46am.”

The spokesperson said no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and that residents from an adjoining apartment complex were evacuated as a precaution.

The name and type of shop that was affected could not be confirmed, however, there was mechanical equipment stored within the building.

A community advice alert was issued due to smoke in the area.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria also attended. •
