New pocket park opens in North Melbourne
North Melbourne has welcomed a new green space with the opening of Bedford Street Pocket Park.
The City of Melbourne began constructing the park in April 2024, delivering a much-needed addition of greenery to Melbourne’s inner city.
Spanning 1500 sqm, the park includes native plants, trees, open lawns, seating, a barbecue, play equipment, and a ping-pong table.
"We know how important green open space is for the community – and this new park is an absolute win for the residents of North Melbourne,” Lord Mayor Nick Reece said.
"Complete with an all-new playground, table tennis table and barbeque, it will be the new go-to spot for locals to play with their pets, dine al fresco with family, or unwind after work.”
During community consultation, a survey of 134 participants found that 90 per cent supported the project, highlighting its benefits in increasing biodiversity and providing new recreational opportunities.
However, a report tabled at the November 22 Future Melbourne Committee meeting noted some concerns, including reduced parking, vehicle access, and potential congestion.
On the other hand, many advocated for prioritising pedestrians and cyclists through enhanced bike infrastructure, fewer parking spaces, and improved traffic calming measures.
This green space is part of the Suburban Parks program, a collaboration between the state and local governments, investing $35 million to develop 29 pocket parks across Melbourne.
These projects focus on transforming both new and underused spaces, helping to cool the city and provide relief from Melbourne’s increasingly hot summers.
“This new park will mean residents can enjoy nature closer to home – all while bringing an abundance of biodiversity to the area and helping keep Melbourne cool,” environment portfolio head Cr Davydd Griffiths said. •
